In 1863, Congress designated the Idaho Territory with the erroneous understanding that Idaho was a Shoshone word meaning Gem of the Mountains. In spite of the misunderstanding concerning the origin of the name the state continues to be known as the “Gem State” and the “Gem of the Mountains”.

Idaho State Board of Cosmetology License Information

In order to obtain a license in cosmetology, nail technology, or esthetics in the state of Idaho, students must complete the requirements isted below. Please contact the Idaho Board of Cosmetology for more information.

Requirements
COSMETOLOGIST: 2000 Hours, apprenticeship 4000 hours
ESTHETICIAN: 800 hours, apprenticeship 1600 hours
NAIL TECHNICIAN: 300 Hours

Additional Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age, of good moral character, and have completed two years of High School or its equivalent.

Reciprocity
Granted to licensed applicants who provide official documentation that the requirements for license under which the license was issued are of a standard not lower than Idaho OR who provide official documentation that they have practiced for at least three (3) years immediately prior to making application. Home salons are allowed. Mobile salons are not allowed .
